The lantern displays go on for weeks while the Lantern Carnival happens on the 15th day of the new lunar year. One at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza and the other at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, both of which are sponsored by the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The sweet, sticky rice balls called ‘yuanxiao’ or ‘tangyuan’ prepared on the occasion symbolise wholeness and unity in the household. ![]() The festival also represents the union of the family. The lanterns exemplify people bidding adieu to the last year and welcoming the new phase with good luck and fortune. The festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year and welcomes spring. Since then, the tradition of hanging lanterns has continued on what we now know as the Chinese Lantern Festival. Their plan was successful and saved the village folk. They hung red lanterns, lit fires across the village and set off fireworks to create the charade. Eventually, they devised a plan to trick the emperor and give him the impression that the village was already under fire. After learning about his evil plan, the monarch’s daughter felt remorseful and decided to warn the villagers. The emperor decided to burn down the perpetrators’ village on the 15th day of the first lunar month, but destiny had other plans.
